Rev up your engines reality talent watchers- we’re priming you for American Idol season 12. If you’re asking yourself, how can this show be on its 12 season- we get it. We’re asking ourselves the same question. Granted, you may not know all the winners off the top of your head, but Idol still tops the rating charts year after year and… we’ll agree the show has turned out some amazing talent.
Who can forget the very first Idol winner? Despite being a continual chart-topper, household name and Grammy winner, Kelly Clarkson seems to be the same down-to-earth girl she was in that inaugural season. And have you heard the news? Kelly recently became engaged to fiancé, Brandon Blackstock. Congrats Kelly!
Ruben Studdard’s smooth voice and lovable personality earned him the nickname the Velvet Teddy Bear, but he’s most famous for stealing the Idol crown on season two from country-star Clay Aiken. His latest single “June 28th (I’m Single)” announces that yes, he is now single, and you’ll love it! But, don’t think Ruben’s career is all about his voice, he’s also caught the acting bug.
Fantasia Barrino, the single-mom contestant turned champ, is now a Grammy winner and actress- both on screen and stage. You may have seen her on Broadway staring as Celie in The Color Purple. If you’re looking for her latest single, give “Lose To Win” a listen.
Carrie Underwood is one of the most high-profile Idol winners to date. When you date professional athletes and then marry hockey heartthrob Mike Fisher, you’re bound to make a few headlines. Her last album, Blown Away, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and we recommend you catch her live- she recently added 40 more North American tour dates.
Road trip! If you’re heading to Vegas, check out Idol’s season five winner Taylor Hicks who is performing live at Bally’s casino. Although, Taylor is doing what he loves, Idol runner up, Katharine McPhee found headline success starring in Smash. Tune in this season and watch Katherine and fellow Idol alum- Jennifer Hudson!
Season 6 launched the career of Jordin Sparks when she was just a teenager making her the youngest winner in Idol’s history. For her latest resume addition, Jordin costarred in “Sparkle”, the 2012 American musical film with the late legendary Whitney Houston.
David Cook was the first rocker to win it all. Since season seven, David released two albums and was romantically linked to another former contestant, Kimberly Caldwell. We love the fact David spends his time on charity work for brain cancer research organizations in memory of his brother.
Staying with the rock n’ roll theme, acoustic man Kris Allen won voting hearts in season eight. Kris released his new album, “Thank You Camellia” and just announced he and his wife are expecting their first child.
In season nine, we voted in music champ Lee DeWyze to be our winner. He is still producing music. In fact, Lee is touring right now and rumor has it- he may release a new album soon.
Scotty McCreery captured voters’ attention in season 10. Idol fun fact- Scotty was the first winner born in the 1990’s! Young Scotty’s debut, “Clear As Day” has already sold over 1.3 million copies and he released a Christmas album this past fall.
Last season, we met Phillip Phillips. Right now, he is enjoying the success of his debut album “The World from the Side of the Moon” and his hit single “Home” is blowing up radio airwaves. We expect big things from this Idol winner!
Idol has turned out an interesting bag of winners. Some careers have struck gold and others have faded into the background. Do you think Idol has the right formula for picking its winners? Are your DVRs set for season 12? Well, we’ll give you our music genre prediction first- we’re going with pop (it’s been a while). We could be wrong… what do you think?
