Coachella isn’t even over yet – there’s still the whole second weekend to go! – but we’re already looking into the future. Stagecoach, Firefly and Lollapalooza are all coming up, but this week we’re more excited by San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival and New Orleans’ Voodoo Music and Arts Experience.

Outside Lands features something most other festivals can’t boast: a true connection to music history. The festival is hosted annually in Golden Gate Park, a seminal location during the Summer of Love. We think the hippies of the 60’s would approve of the festival – some of them probably will attend to see headliner Paul McCartney! Joining Sir Paul are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails and Phoenix, followed by a who’s-who of hot indie bands: Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The National, Grizzly Bear, Band of Horses…the list goes on and on. The festival runs from Aug. 9 to 11, but plan on bringing blankets and sweatshirts if you go just in case – as the popular saying goes- “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

The Voodoo Music and Arts Experience begins Nov. 1 through 3 in New Orleans, and it’ll probably be a lot warmer than August is in San Francisco. As the name suggests, the annual festival takes place around Halloween – besides Mardi Gras, can you think of a better time to visit the Big Easy? Nine Inch Nails is a holdover from Outside Lands, but other than that, the lineups are very different – rock fans and electronic junkies take note. Pearl Jam co-headlines and will be supported by Calvin Harris, Bassnectar, Paramore, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and The Gaslight Anthem. Between the holiday and the music, we’re guessing there will be a lot of black-clad festival goers!

So which festival should you go to? How about both? Ok, we admit it might be tough to make both trips, but we can dream. There’s something for everyone at Outside Lands and Voodoo – which are you more excited for?
