It’s June! While summer may not be “officially” here (the solstice is June 21st), it’s close enough for us! Schools are almost out, BBQ weather is here and our favorite summer rite of passage is right around the bend- Fair & Festival season! We can’t wait to sample the newest fried-food concoctions, play carnival games and check out live music. Here’s what is happening in your city. If you don’t see your town listed, visit Eventful– we’ll have your Fair & Festival low down.
San Diego, Calif.
The San Diego County Fair starts Saturday, June 8! New this year: Drumroll please…The Big Bite Bacon Fest! If that title doesn’t get you bacon aficionados out there, we’re not sure what will. The bacon bonanza starts on Father’s Day, June 16th. After you eat, dance off your calories. This year the fair concert season will host everyone from The Beach Boys, Steve Miller Band, and REO Speedwagon to Martina McBride, Kendrick Lamar and “Weird Al” Yankovic– something for every music lover out there!
Dreaming of the beach, but you’re landlocked? Check out the 2013 Ho’olaule’a (Hoe-Oh-Lau-Lay-A) Hawaiian Summer Festival on June 22nd. Grab some island-style food, learn to Hula, (or watch some Tahitian dance demonstrations if you’ve got two left feet!) and play Hawaiian games with the kiddos. Aloha attire is encouraged- don’t forget your Hawaiian shirt, grass skirt and flora lei.
Feel like an adults-only event? Taste some beer AND help out a worthy cause at The Festival 2013 Maine Edition on June 21-22. The admission price of $65 may seem steep, but this gets you 48 tickets for samples of beer, ciders and meads and you can meet the brewers. In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland (a portion of every admission supports them), this is not something a beer lover should miss! Don’t fret, designated drivers will not be served thanks to a special wristband, but free, non-alcoholic beverages are available.
Austin, as always, has to be unique! The Keep Austin Weird Festival and 5K on June 22nd has “the slowest 5K you’ll ever run!” Grab your costume and run through a variety of fun stops. Afterwards, relax and rock out to some music, refuel and rehydrate with local food and drinks and play in the kids zone with your little ones. With headliner Shiny Toy Guns, The Whigs and The Greencards, this unique festival will bring joy to the whole (costumed) family!
Can’t take that Caribbean vacation this year? Come on out to the Charlotte Caribbean Festival on June 29th for a slice of the island life! Now in its 13th year, the Charlotte fest and parade draws visitors from far and wide. The family-oriented cultural event features authentic and traditional music and dance, live entertainment, children’s activities and educational workshops. But, don’t forget to eat! Not only does the festival celebrate the rich culture and customs of the Islands of Antigua and Barbuda, but after trying the authentic Caribbean cuisine, you will too.
