Key West, Florida
Tired of the same old beauty pageants, with the over-the-top evening gowns and the dubious question and answer portion? Would you prefer something witty and genuinely entertaining? Do you like key lime pie? Then don’t miss The Key Lime Festival on July 5th, where pageantry and pie merge to create the Miss Key Lime Pageant Showcase. Taking place at the world famous Green Parrot, the free event begins at 8pm, and after the winner is crowned, the after-party begins with the multi-cultural experimental band Xperimento.
Santa Barbara, CA
Attending a concert at the gorgeous Santa Barbara Bowl is quite an experience- you can bask in the sun at the beach all day and rock out under the moonlight that very night. In July, catch Slightly Stoopid and Atmosphere on the 14th, Belle & Sebastian and Best Coast on the 17th, and The Postal Service on the 20th- make a whole week of it! Or check out the Santa Barbara Mariachi Festival on August 3rd, and cha-cha-cha the night away.
Virginia Beach, VA area
If you love to laugh (and who doesn’t, right?) the second annual Norfolk Comedy Festival on July 18th, 19th and 20th will be right up your alley. Featuring Kevin Allison of MTV’s “The State,” The Generic Theater & The Pushers present three nights of sketch comedy and improv, with Thursday the 18th being the local showcase. A “Laugh Pass” is available for $30 for both shows on Friday and Saturday and $60 for all three nights.
Are you a Parrothead stranded miles from Margaritaville? Don’t fret- Jimmy will come to you! On June 29th, Jimmy Buffet and special guest Mishka will play at the Charter One Pavilion on Northerly Island- right on Lake Michigan! Anyone that has been to a Buffet concert can attest- a Parrothead party is like nothing you have ever seen before!
New Orleans, LA
If you like to exercise on vacation, you may be in the minority. But add in some zombies, and you just might be able to convince the rest of your travel crew to run a 5K. Touring various spots across the United States, the Zombie Run hits New Orleans, Louisiana on June 23rd. Do you think you can survive this race, with zombies on the loose? Or, register as a zombie and be what everyone is running from. Both humans and “zombies” will receive t-shirts and souvenir gear, but only the zombies get this perk- all the brains they can catch!
