If you haven’t noticed, the end of summer is slowly creeping closer. Kids will go back to school soon, vacations will end and the summer blockbuster season will cease. Accordingly, studios have been pulling double duty by releasing films on Wednesdays and Fridays. This week, there are two action films big films being released .

Elysium

Writer/director Neil Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9 is receiving a lot of attention from critics, audiences and even fellow filmmakers. As in his first movie, the African director injects poignant political and social commentary into a story packed with action and drama. Although it takes place in a dystopian future, Blomkamp denies that it’s a science fiction movie, claiming the state of immigration, health care, and class status portrayed in the film are happening now. The film is set in a future where Earth has become a disease-ridden, third world slum and humanity’s elite live on a space station known as Elysium, complete with life-saving technology and unequivocal luxury. When an ex-con (Matt Damon) on Earth contracts a cancer virus while at work, he plots an escape to Elysium — with the help of a powerful exoskeleton – to cure his disease. First, he’ll have to get by the Secretary of Defense (Jodie Foster) and her ruthless henchman (Sharlto Copley). Again, showtimes.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

It’s been three years since the release of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, but fans of the young adult series haven’t waned in their love of the young demigod. Based on the books by Rick Riordan, the film continues the adventures of the Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, his satyr friend Grover, love interest and daughter of Athena, Annabeth, and newly discovered Cyclops half-brother Tyson. When a tree protecting their home, Camp Half-Blood, starts to die, they’ll have to traverse the deadly Sea of Monsters (Bermuda Triangle) to retrieve the Golden Fleece in order to keep the tree alive and their sanctuary safe. With Percy able to control water, expect this high seas adventure to feature more epic battles and incredible special effects. Check out showtimes and tickets for the film here.
