War films do more than entertain us for a few hours; they honor all those who currently serve and have served in the military. Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg take this responsibility with the utmost respect in Lone Survivor.
Based on The New York Times bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, the film tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs (Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster) on a covert mission in the mountains of Afghanistan. When their mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative is compromised, the SEAL team faces an impossible moral decision and unthinkable odds. The film deftly adapts Marcus Luttrell’s first-person memoir of the same name, portraying both the harsh realities of combat and the emotional bonds between those who serve. If Lone Survivor seems more authentic than past war films, it should – Luttrell advised the cast and crew on set and throughout production. Wahlberg (who portrays Luttrell on screen) and the cast even underwent a version of Navy SEAL training to prepare for filming.
The dedication to detail and authenticity show on the big screen, and critics are noticing. Grantland‘s Bill Simmons called the film, “The most extraordinary war film since Saving Private Ryan” and Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers says it is, “a power-house film.” Don’t miss out on the most powerful war film of this generation – Lone Survivor is now playing, get tickets and showtimes near you!
