More new features, bug fixes

Thanks to a long list of beta testers who've been reporting bugs over the past couple weeks. We've gone and fixed a number of pesky problems, some more visible than others.

We've also added some new features on the site.

New Feature: Clickable Tags & Tag Search
You can now click on tag links on event and venue detail pages. Doing so will take you to the search results page, where you will see all events/venues which match the name of the tag you clicked. This way you can browse around the site and see other items that have the same tag.

New Feature: New Event Bookmarklet
We've just added a bookmarklet for adding new events. So now, it's easy to add events while surfing other websites… A bookmarklet is a simple one-click tool that allows a web browser to do simple and helpful tasks. At first glance, a bookmarklet appears to be just a regular link — you can click it or add it your favorites. But, unlike other links, bookmarklets consist of small snippets of Javascript code that do small tasks when activated.

To install the bookmarklet on most browsers, just drag the bookmarklet link to your browser's favorites bar. (Using IE6? You need to follow these instructions.)

Once the bookmarklet is installed, here's how to use it:

  1. Find an event you'd like to add to EVDB
  2. Click on the bookmarklet link
  3. The bookmarklet will open a compact version of the New Event page
  4. Add your event!

Optional step: the bookmarklet will copy any selected text from the webpage where it is activated. So save yourself some typing!

The cool part about this is you no longer need to use the EVDB website to add events. So, if you come across a cool event in your web travels, just click the bookmarklet and add the event. (If you're not logged in, you'll need to do so… which you can do using the bookmarklet itself.)

Bookmarklets are very popular in the blogging world, and we see no reason it shouldn't be the same with adding events to EVDB.

Smart Calendar Notifications Now Working!

Notifications are now working. This means if in your Smart Calendars you've indicated you want to be notified whenever a matching event gets added, updated, or withdrawn from the system, you'll get an email!

Here's how it works.

First, you need to sign in (or register as a new user). Then, from the home page, create a smart calendar.

For example purposes, let's say you want to create a smart calendar that tracks any public events that Guy Kawasaki is participating in. You would click on the little "+" box next to the word "Smart Calendars", to add a new smart calendar. In this example, we'll call it "kawasaki-watch".

Once you've created the smart calendar, you can add some settings such as some conditions to indicate you want to track events that contain the term "kawasaki".

The resulting Smart Calendar will look something like this:

To turn on notifications for this Smart Calendar, you'd want to go to this Smart Calendar's settings page (by clicking the Settings box at the top) and then down at the bottom of the settings page, click the "Send me an email" checkbox followed by one of the three radio buttons to indicate how often you'd like to receive emails (should there be something new for the system to alert you about). See the illustration below:

In this example, as more events flow into EVDB that have to do somehow with Guy Kawasaki, you'll start receiving email updates automatically! For instance, here's what an email might look like:

You can always change the frequency of the emails (hourly only makes sense if you absolutely positively Need To Know when stuff gets updated quickly) or disable the notification altogether by un-checking the "Send me an email" checkbox on the Settings page.

Some things that still need to be done with Smart Calendars
We're not done with Smart Calendars. For one thing, it's hard to pin down the location or geographical area of events you might be interested in. We're aware of this and are working to improve what kinds of settings and conditions you can specify so that Smart Calendars work even, well, smarter! :-)

We hope you'll give Smart Calendar notifications a try and we hope you find events you might otherwise have missed! Be sure to let us know what you think and how we can make Smart Calendars better.

4/30/05: Moving Day

Friday was lease-signing day, and the day to pack up for the Saturday move.

We'd gone to a team lunch on Friday to welcome two new employees (Danny Markham formerly of Napster and MP3.com, and Patrick Crowley of Mokolabs and the creator of iCalShare), and upon returning from lunch, we found a FedEx delivery with our copies of Tiger (as if an office move weren't enough distraction!)

Friday was the day the bits went live in the new office space as well.

Sure seems like an awful lot of Apple logos on the boxes we were packing!

You might think the UHAUL van rents for $19.95 a day, but don't be fooled. We only had it for like 4 hours, to drive maybe 20 miles tops, and they charged over $60 -- and we still needed multiple trips and other carloads.

The IKEA GALANT desks arrive.

Some assembly required.

EVDB's new home.
