Sips 'n' Science: The Mighty Mason Bee

Have you ever thought what our diet would be like without pollinators? Consider for a moment that insect-pollinated fruits and vegetables provide most of the vitamins and minerals we need, and they diversify our diet beyond meat and wind-pollinated grains. Approximately one-in-three mouthfuls of food and drink require the presence of a pollinator. Without bees, there would be no apples, pumpkins, strawberries, or many other fruits and vegetables.

Pollinators are in decline, but you can help. Mason bee, orchard bee, blue orchard bee, and spring mason bee are all common names for the Osmia lignaria, a solitary bee native to North America that is easy to support in your home garden. Jerry Paul, a board member of the Benton Soil and Water Conservation District, will introduce you to the mason bee lifecycle and share with us some tips on how to encourage and care for our native pollinators, including how to care for your own mason bee boxes.
