Shucking 101 classes at Portland Oyster Shop

The folks at Portland Oyster Shop are spreading the bivalve gospel with monthly Shucking 101 classes at their Portland, Maine raw bar and shellfish market. The intimate, 5-person classes will give guests a hands-on opportunity to perfect the art of oyster shucking, as well as learn how to store and serve the delicacy. Oyster experts Kit Paschal and Jen Wyllie will walk participants through the life of an oyster, from its days on the farm to its final appearance on the table.

The Island Creek Oysters outpost, located at 123 Washington Ave in Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood, is a dining and wholesale buying station for a hand-picked selection of Maine- and Massachusetts-grown shellfish. Shucking 101 tickets are $30, and include 6 oysters, shucking gloves and a knife to take home. Beer and wine are available for purchase. Classes take place on the last Thursday of every month through April (January 25th, February 22nd, March 29th, and April 26th) from 6:30-7:30pm. Guests can reserve a spot by emailing jen@islandcreekoysters.com.

The Shop gives guests an opportunity to engage with local products in a casual setting, underscored by the deep understanding of aquaculture Island Creek Oysters is known for. Seasonal seafood offerings for purchase include local bivalves such as Little Island oysters from the Bagaduce River and Mookie Blues oysters from Damariscotta, Maine. Inspired by the heritage of Maine’s canneries, The Shop features a selection of international tinned fish and caviar. A rotating selection of champagne and wines by the glass complements The Shop’s simple, ingredient-forward menu.
