16th Annual Walkathon Scheduled to Raise Funds and Disease Awareness

WHAT: On June 22 local volunteers, families and supporters will participate in the 16th annual community walkathon entitled, Step Forward to Cure Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. The event takes place rain or shine at Carmel High School at 1 Carmel Parkway Mundelein, IL 60060, with registration beginning at 10 am and the walk at 11 am. All proceeds benefit the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance). Walkers can register to participate in person on walk day or in advance at www.StepForwardtoCureTSC.org. While registration is free, prizes will be awarded to the top three individual fundraisers. All walkers raising at least $100 will receive a Step Forward to Cure TSC t-shirt. In addition to the walk itself, participants may enjoy a raffle/silent auction, face painting, a balloon artist, a kids’ corner, a variety of food, a DJ and booths hosted by local sponsors.
WHO: Founded in 1974 by four mothers, the TS Alliance is the leading source of information and resources to help individuals and families optimize care for those affected by tuberous sclerosis complex. It is also the driving force behind funding and organizing TSC-related research. The organization is dedicated to finding a cure while improving the lives of those impacted by the disease. For more information about the TS Alliance or TSC, visit www.tsalliance.org or call (800) 225-6872. WHY: Step Forward to Cure Tuberous Sclerosis Complex was created to raise awareness of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), a sometimes devastating genetic disorder, while generating the funds critical to identifying effective treatments and an eventual cure. As the leading genetic cause of both autism and epilepsy, TSC is estimated to affect nearly 50,000 people in the United States and more than one million worldwide. Although it can be transmitted through genetic inheritance, about two-thirds of TSC cases are believed to be a spontaneous mutation. TSC is a multi-system disorder, due to the growth of tumors in vital organs, such as the brain, heart, kidney, lungs and skin. People with TSC commonly develop epilepsy, behavioral disorders (such as attention deficit disorder-ADD), skin disorders (such as lesions) and other symptoms. Last year’s local fundraising goal was $60,000; however, the approximately 200 people who participated raised $71,222! This year’s Chicago walk goal is again $60,000.
