FILM NIGHT: "Newburgh: The Sixth Borough" and "AMERICA, America"

Two films written & produced by Mark Gamma are featured for our Dec. 12 Film Night.

All-American City and Little Manhattan are two titles Mark A. Gamma’s “Newburgh: The Sixth Borough” recalls in his play about the city’s bright and shady past. Gamma plays an old man who settles in at a local bar for an evening of nostalgic monologues and Guinness, with Jack the bartender listening and refreshing his drinks.

Starting with his Italian and Russian grandparents, the hero centers his memories on landmarks such as the Gas House, the Tea Room and the Ritz where Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball would try out their acts on Newburgh’s Broadway before heading 60 miles south to Broadway’s Great White Way. As a boy, the hero learned to sing and act with a Mrs. Fox in hopes of making the big time, but when a mobster named Bruno wanted to cut into the deal and was refused, the hero’s promising career came to an abrupt end.

With his glib tongue, wide grin and glaring eyes, Gamma is funny and lively as he jumps from episode to episode with a menagerie of local celebrities and con men.

If you want the complete history of Newburgh abbreviated, with its gossip and gaffes and dirty laundry, this is the film for you.
