      2019 Chappaqua Children's Book Festival

The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival (CCBF), the largest children’s book festival in the metropolitan tri-state region, will take place on Saturday, October 5 from 10 am-4 pm at Robert E. Bell Middle School in Chappaqua, New York. 145 renowned children’s book authors and illustrators will be participating in the festival’s seventh annual event, http://www.ccbfestival.org/. Admission and parking are free and the event will be held rain or shine. And, this year we are privileged to have Jarrett Krosoczka kick off the 2019 festivities, as our keynote speaker, at 10 am.

In its seventh year, the Festival, promoting community and literacy will have authors covering multiple genres and reading levels, author readings, illustrator Demos, Book Signings, books for sale, a Gourmet Food Court with “Food For Thought” food trucks from around the region offering great eats and The Great Chappaqua Bake Sale selling baked treats and raffle tickets to benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry mission to end childhood hunger. A portion of book sales will go to benefit literacy programs in area schools. The Festival this year, has expanded its girth to include the Bell soccer field, with the increase in attending authors.

The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival, was recently voted “Best Bookworm Event” by Westchester Magazine. This year’s Book Festival poster, which can be seen on the CCBF home page, http://www.ccbfestival.org/ was created by renowned designer, illustrator and author, Roxie Munro. Roxie's inspiration for this year's CCBF poster was the festival's nonfiction 2019 theme. Roxie is a writer and illustrator, and nonfiction is her passion. Being asked to create the art for this year's poster was a perfect fit. Copies of the poster will be available for sale at the festival. The art will also appear on mugs, bags and other merchandise available on festival day.

This year CCBF will feature more than 55 new authors and illustrators in addition to last year’s 90 incredible authors, including Seymour Simon (a regular speaker in the Chappaqua School District), Ruth Chan, Padma Venkatraman Jerry Craft, Kate Messner and many CCBF regulars, including Victoria Kann, Alyssa Capucilli, Bernard Most, Gail Carson Levine, Barbara Dee, and Peter Lerangis, among many others.

New this year, at the Festival, we will be presenting three different literature panels at varied times throughout the day, inside Bell Middle School. The first panel The Non-Fiction Panel—“Keeping It Real: Authors Discuss Writing Nonfiction for Young Readers,” will include participating authors Sally Cook, Sarah Albee, Seymour Simon & Laurie Wallmark. Our second panel, “Girls in the World” will include author panelists, Barbara Dee, Lisa Greenwald, and Veera Hiranandani. Each of these three middle school book authors will share her unique perspective on the complex and often fraught issues of identity, friendship, boundaries, and home, focusing on adolescent girls’ development, growth, and empowerment. Our third panel, “All the Feels”: How Books Help Kids Understand Their Emotions will include panelist authors Holly McGhee, Lizzy Rockwell and Susan Verde. The panel will discuss the books they have written about emotions and how books can help children deal with their feelings.

Fun activities for the day will include the Bubble Bus, art projects highlighting books at the Festival, mural painting, juggling and walking the tightrope, hair braiding and learning a musical instrument. This year, KidLit TV will be filming and broadcasting live from the Book Festival. KidLit TV is the first free multimedia website connecting parents and educators with authors, illustrators and their books. It is available to over 600,000 schools worldwide via its website and video distribution partners, https://kidlit.tv/.

The Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival is grassroots, all-volunteer effort, with community members working together so that children and teens can be inspired by their favorite authors. The Festival gives kids and families a chance to meet and interact with the creators of their favorite characters – to appreciate that there is a real person behind the art and the words on the page.

Since its inception in 2013, the Chappaqua Children’s Book Festival has grown from 65 authors to 140, and from 4,000 visitors, to an expected 8,000 this year, from all over the tri-state region.
