      PORTRAITS OIL PAINTING w/Jim Alexander

      Intermediate/Advanced. We will focus only on portraiture in this class. Students will learn the 5 formal steps of this “Old Master “ technique:


      Ways of getting a preparatory drawing onto the canvas

      Completing a monochromatic underpainting (one neutral color plus white)

      Applying ” local color “ layers over the underpainting

      Adding final refinements, details and textures

      Applying thin, colored, transparent glazes to alter some areas and enhance the painting


      Class will consist of demonstrations and individual guidance. Students will be expected to

      complete 2 portrait paintings.

      On an 11X14” canvas - First one will consist of copying a color photograph of a person,

      (supplied by the instructor).by following step by step instructions (in the tradition of the old


      On a 16X20” canvas - Second painting will be a portrait of a person chosen by each individual

      student’ and completed by the student with suggestions and guidance from the instructor

      Materials needed:

      Paints - Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue,
      Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green and Paynes Gray. + Plus any other colors you may have. Any brand but I recommend Windsor-Newton or Gamblin's.
      Brushes - Synthetic, nylon sablon or similar variety . #1 Round Synthetic, #2 Bright synthetic, #8 Bright synthetic, 1/2 inch soft Angled Shader
      Canvas - 2 pre stretched, pre primed canvases. One - 11x14” and One 16x20”
      Medium - odorless mineral spirits to clean your brushes,.
      One small jar of either Windsor and Newton's Liquin painting medium or Gamblin’s Neo Megilp painting medium..
      Disposable paper palette or other
      Small palette knife, Rags and old towels for blotting and cleanup,
      Small jars with lids to keep Mineral Spirits in.
      Small jar for painting medium
      Can of Retouch Varnish

      No Refunds or Transfers can only be issued if The Art Center cancels the class
