      Historic Cemetery Tour

On Sunday, September 22 at 2 p.m., Union Presbyterian Church is sponsoring a tour of their historic Riverside Cemetery, located at 400 Vestal Avenue, Endicott. Established in 1791, it is the burial place of early settlers in the Union district of Endicott including John and Joshua Mersereau who fought with George Washington in the Revolutionary War. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Tim Main, local historian, will lead the tour and the church will serve refreshments afterward. The public is invited. Rain date will be September 29.
Joshua Mersereau (1728-1804) was educated at Kings College (now Columbia University), and practiced law in New York City. He and his brother John ran the first line of stage coaches between New York and Philadelphia. John introduced the first post-coach into the country from England. When the revolution broke out, the stages belonging to the brothers were stopped and the horses turned over to the American service for the army. Because of a questionable prisoner transfer, the British headquarters proclaimed John Mersereau a "Rebel," and set a price of five hundred guineas on his head, dead or alive. Joshua assisted in gathering a company for the Quebec expedition in the autumn of 1775. Some of Joshua’s letters prove he was in contact with General Washington, John Adams and John Hancock, and Joshua writes of General Howe as well as General Burgoyne’s surrender.
