      Senior Helpers is proud to welcome Teepa Snow back to Erie. Teepa is one of America's leading educators on dementia and she will be offering two information packed seminars at the Zem Zem Shrine Club on Tuesday November 5th. The afternoon session is targeted to family caregivers and the general public. 2:00pm - 3:00pm Registration, Snacks and information booths      3:00pm - 5:00pm The ABC's of Dementia and Caregiving This session is designed to help learners understand the definition of dementia, and some characteristics of the most common forms of dementia. Attendees will also discover the many brain changes associated with dementia, and how those changes affect function and behavior. Techniques and methods for improving caregiving situations will also be discussed. By recognizing and using this information, learners can have more positive interactions with those living with dementia. This session will be interactive and will provide learners with valuable insights into their role in dementia care.  Objectives:      By the end of this session, learners will be able to: Define dementia and the brain changes associated with dementia                                                Discuss the differences between normal and not normal Identify and describe the major types of dementia Describe common behaviors that are symptoms of dementia Describe the importance of an accurate diagnosis  Outline:      Describe and define the terms: dementia, Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia,                          Lewy Body dementia        Discuss normal and not normal aging characteristics          Compare dementia with depression and delirium to highlight the importance of                         getting a good diagnosis        Discuss and demonstrate typical brain changes during the stages of dementia            and behaviors that accompany these changes for the following:                                                      i.    Memory                                                     ii.    Understanding of language                                                    iii.    Speech                                                   iv.    Sensory processing                                                    v.    Impulse control                                                   vi.    Reasoning      Use role play, DVD clips, and interactions with learners to reinforce that these            changes are part of the condition, NOT willfulness or choice on the part of the            person living with dementia       Highlight the importance of their role in helping people with dementia being            successful and controlling some of these symptoms Methods:          The instructor will use discussion, paired interaction, group discussion, self-directed quiz completion, case discussion, PowerPoint presentation, role play and lecture to provide learners with opportunities to gain knowledge and skills related to their personality traits and preferences. A morning seminar will also be availalbe. The topics covered in that session will be more targeted to healthcare professionals. Anyone who is familiar with Teepa knows that she has a very unique and humorous way of sharing her in-depth knowlege about dementia and Alzheimer's. This is a must see event for anyone who knows someone dealing with dementia or anyone who just wants to expand their knowledge regarding dementia.
