Gender Diversity in Reproductive Health: A 2019 Four-Part Series

In this four-part workshop series, we will explore the relationship of gender and sexual orientation with gestational and birth experiences through activities and interactive discussion. Doula Sequoia Kantara will share pregnancy and birth stories from zir gender diverse clients and offer insights into some of the unique challenges gender diverse folks encounter in pre- and perinatal mental health. We will also examine the relationship of our identities as providers to those of the people we serve and the challenges that arise within the varied intersections we experience through in-depth skill-building exercises. A key focus will be placed on gender affirming language and terminology, and consent and boundaries around diverse bodies and identities, as well as specific strategies for supporting people with identities different from our own. Please feel free to come with questions and examples of challenges you’ve faced in supporting gender diverse people. We will weave participants’ inquiries into the discussion. At a time when the dominant culture is closing in on the margins and threatens to erase the voices of diversity within our communities, as health care providers throughout the reproductive cycle, we hold the potential to stand at the vanguard of a revolution in radical inclusivity. Rather than threatening the hard-won gains of feminism, we are strengthening the child-bearing community by expanding our understanding and communication skills to include nonbinary, masculine, gender diverse, trans and queer people who choose to create new life. The dates for the full series are the following Wednesdays, 9a-12p: 4/10 or 5/16, 6/12, 9/18 & 11/13. If you select the series purchase option, you will be registered for the full series and do not need to register for future events. If you only register for the first session at this time, please return to this event page to register for each successive workshop as the prior one is completed. Participants must attend at least one of the Spring workshops to attend the final two workshops of the series in the end of Summer/Fall dates.  We encourage you to register for the full series in advance. This is a multi-part program where each session builds on the last, and the workshops are designed to be taken together. Registering in advance helps us organize workshop locations and also helps preserve the intention of the course. Thank you for your support!  Sponsorships are available! Email to discuss details.
