Dr Susan Jenkins, Curator at Westminster Abbey, talks about the commissioning, design, production and installation of David Hockney’s first stained glass window commission, dedicated in October 2018. A commission initiated by the outgoing Dean of Westminster, the Very Revd Dr John Hall, the window is a celebration of the Queen’s reign. At fellow artist Tacita Dean’s suggestion, Hockney chose a landscape composition, very different from any other stained glass window in the Abbey. Using a composition that he has frequently represented in his paintings, Hockney depicts the hawthorn blossom in his native Yorkshire Wolds. Dr Jenkins’ talk coincides with the publication of a well-illustrated book recording the making of the window, with a new Q&A interview with David Hockney by Young British Artist (YBA) Tacita Dean.
