      Thank you for registering for The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc. Working with Aquatint Workshop with Michael Kempson being held on Saturday & Sunday 21 & 22 September 2019. Please find below all the information you need regarding workshop attendance. Date:             21 & 22 September 2019 Time:              10:00 to 16:00hrs Venue:           Building 3 Lions Community Hall,  8 Russell Drysdale St                       East Gosford (entrance at the rear of the building)  Michael Kempson is Senior Lecturer, Convenor of Printmaking Studies & Director of Cicada PressUNSW. Michael is a master printmaker with a wealth of experience working with students through to accomplished artists across Australia. The focus of this workshop will be on the application of aquatint and its many guises. Aquatint is drawn from a suite of techniques at the disposal of intaglio printmakers that is often used in conjunction with hard ground to comprise the basic building blocks of an image – line and tone. This workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to make work using fine and coarse approaches to aquatint. In so doing you’ll get some informed insights into how to manage the process relative to your creative intensions, from the very simplest of images to multiple-plate work. All levels of experience are welcome. Participants are asked to bring some ideas and if you already have some zinc plates that you have started and would like to further resolve. What will be covered over the course of the two days: Introduction and examples of aquatinted prints The fundamental principles of aquatint How to apply the aquatint to get best outcomes Bath biting Spit biting Gradating biting Blocking out methods for bitumen, crayon and tusche Printing an aquatinted plate Intaglio image production using aquatint In considering attending this workshop you should have some knowledge of printmaking, and in particular etching with metal plates. What will be provided: Basic etching tools are available on loan Apron Zinc plates ~20 x 25cm Nitric acid etch Oil based inks  1 sheet of Hahnemuhle 300gsm printmaking paper – also available for $8 a sheet at the studio should you wish to use more than the allocation Tarlatan, newspaper, tissue paper 2 x Presses  What you should bring: If you have etching tools please bring them with you – some very basic tools are available for use at the studio Your own art journal & creative ideas Lunch Bringing your own art journal to record your own notes about process and achievements – it will be invaluable to you when attempting to reproduce these techniques at a later stage. Morning & afternoon teas will be provided. Please remember to bring some lunch (we have access to a microwave and a fridge) – unfortunately, the cafes are not close, and please remember to wear closed in shoes. This workshop will enable you to experiment and explore new ideas with an experienced facilitator who will help guide your work and exploration.  The Makers Studio looks forward to working with you on 21 & 22 September 2019.
