      Water and Coastal Scenes in Watercolor (Ages 13 to adult)

      This workshop focuses on the unique properties of watercolor to depict water and coastal scenes.  Painting moving water such as waves and still water with reflections will be studied along with different coastal landscapes.  Learn how to convey jagged cliffs, rocks, and sandy shore beaches and how the different colors of water depict water depth and weather conditions.  Some drawing and watercolor experience suggested.

      Course Objectives:

      • Master the concept of reflections in water
      • Learn to paint waves that “move”
      • Use various techniques to produce textural coastal effects
      • Learn how to “save the white” of our paper and why it’s important
      • Understand how color affects water
      • Produce an 11×14 painting utilizing these techniques

      Supply List: Supplies can be rented from the instructor with prior notice for a $35 fee or students may bring their own.  Email Shirley at


      • Medium size flat or wash brush
      • Small flat brush
      • Small and large rounds

      Suggested Paints or Equivalent:

      • Alizarin Crimson
      • Cadmium Red
      • New Gamboge or Yellow Ochre
      • Lemon Yellow
      • French Ultramarine Blue
      • Cerulean Blue
      • Viridian
      • Optional: Payne’s Grey, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna

      Watercolor Paper:

      • 140 lb, 200 lb, or 300 lb cold pressed watercolor paper. (140 lb. paper should be stretched PRIOR to workshop)
      • Bring enough for practice and a prepared 11×14 sheet with an appropriate support board.


      • Water container
      • Paper towels
      • Soft pencil for sketching
      • Kneaded eraser
      • Ruler (optional)
      • Old toothbrush
      • Natural sponge
      • Salt
      • Palette for mixing paint
