      World Wednesday: Mexican Pom Poms

This year's Summer Reading Program theme is "A Universe of Stories." One way we can discover new stories around the world (and beyond) is to encourage cultural literacy. On Wednesdays, join us for an activity that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures.

The traditional clothing of the Huichol Nation, an Indigenous Nation from the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango, is adorned with many colorful pom poms with tassels. To the Huichol Nation, pom poms signify “the way.” These bursts of color are a reiteration of roses in full bloom as to Huicholes, their path is always filled with roses. Often a gesture of good luck, pom poms make a cute decoration for backpacks, doorknobs, or just a burst of color for your room!
