      EVENT DETAILS
      Bethe Public Lecture

Professor Paul Chaikin, NYU, will deliver the Hans Bethe Public Lecture. He will talk about "How many M&M’s® in that jar? Particle Packings, Frustration and Why Things Crystallize"
Abstract: Packing problems—how densely objects can fill a space—are among the most ancient and persistent problems in mathematics and science. Of course, grocers have known how to pack equal-sized spheres for millennia: witness the way they stack oranges. What about other shapes? This talk will explore how we study packing with colloids and candies on Earth, in space, and on the surface of spheres and catenoids.
