Live performance of Finnish Music with Silent Film, "Laveata Tietä"

On Friday, October 25, at 7pm, the Finger Lakes Finns are proud to present a special musical movie event: A live performance of Finnish classical and folk music arranged for organ, violin, and piano as the original soundtrack for the Finnish silent film "Laveata Tietä" (The Wide Road). [1931, Finnish and English subtitles]

Organist Kent Washburn from Arlington, VA, and formerly of Ithaca, NY, will be joined by Tuulikki Tammi on violin and a pianist, performing the new soundtrack live at the First Unitarian Church of Ithaca, at the corner of Buffalo and Aurora Streets in Ithaca.

This event is free and open to the public; donations gratefully accepted.

Laveata Tietä presents the story of famous violinist and heartthrob Anton Lardozo (Teuvo Tulio), who wanders through European high society wowing audiences and breaking hearts. But when Lardozo wins the heart of innocent country girl Kirsti (Eeva Virtanen) he sets off a savage chain reaction of jealousy and revenge that threatens everyone, including his best friend Eero (Kaarlo Penttilä) and the infatuated ex-admirer Tanita (Alli Riks).

Kent Washburn was born in Ithaca, NY, where his parents Raili (Tontti) and Carl Washburn were founding members of Ithaca's Finger Lakes Finns. He studied organ with concert organist David Jackson of Spencer, NY, and later with Dr. Will Headlee at Syracuse University. He became the full-time organist at the Danby Federated Church in Danby, NY, in 1994. He moved to Northern Virginia in 1995, where he is currently the organist at the Arlington Memorial Baptist Church in Arlington, VA. A frequent musical guest at Finnish heritage events, Kent also studies Finnish at the Finnish Language School of Arlington, Virginia.
