H.O.W. Merced Dinner Honoring: Nery Henderson

Nery is a long-time resident of Merced and was previously a personal trainer, but is now a stay-at-home mom. While in her 20s, she met her husband, Joe, who became a Senior Police Officer for the Merced Police Department. She was an amazing wife to Joe, and later became a wonderful mother to their precious son, Logan. She has a caring soul inside of her, and she will make you feel special, and when you spend time with her, you always feel like your love cup is full. Her care for others was greatly realized when she became full-time support for Joe. After only a few months in their whirlwind romance, Nery noticed something began to feel “off” about him. His speech, memory, etc. was so concerning, she made him go to the doctor, and their first tragic news was delivered: Joe had brain cancer, which is the same cancer his father was battling at that time. Since their relationship was in its new stages, Nery could have left the relationship, but instead of bowing out, she stood strong and never wavered in helping Joe get through his brain surgery, extensive chemotherapy and radiation therapies. Their teamwork beat the first tumors, and after 6 months into dating, Joe knew he hit the jackpot with Nery and asked her to be his wife. He even surprised her at their reception by playing his guitar and singing her a love song in front of hundreds of their guests. They longed to start a family together however Joe’s treatments made conceiving a challenge. After experiencing difficulties to become pregnant, they finally received a miracle: Logan Anthony. For the next 5 years, parenting was a joy and Nery and Joe ate up everything about being the parents of their baby boy. During those years, while the distraction of their life as a complete family was full and happy, there was a looming fear during Joe’s regular brain scan that was exponentially heightened by the fact that there was even more to lose now, more than ever. In late 2017 when Joe’s MRI results came back with new and active spots on his brain and the news that the tumors were inoperable; the devastation was unimaginable. Nery put on her best brave face and when asked how she managed to be so strong, her response was “I don’t have a choice, this is my life and I have a sick husband and a precious son to take care of.” Joe’s brain cancer quickly took its toll. His body began to fight him. The last 4 to 5 months of his life, his health noticeably declined a little more each day. The day after Joe’s 41st birthday, he watched his once robust fun-loving, honorable, full of life and dedicated father slip away into a death brought on by the same ugly cancer. During Joe’s last weeks, Nery wrapped him in her love and became his voice when he could no longer speak. She could see in his eyes what he needed, and cuddled in the tiny sliver of a hospital bed, to be next to him, just as he wanted her to be. Nery’s time since Joe’s passing isn’t easier with time, and faces each day with the difficulty knowing he is no longer on this Earth. The community support from people and groups, like H. O. W., help Nery feel the love, giving her a huge embrace to her grieving soul.           ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HOW IT WORKS: Dinner is $20 and attendees are asked to give a minimum gift of $10 (cash) to the honoree. There is a prize drawing for which tickets are sold, $1 each or 6 for $5. At the end of the evening, the entire proceeds from the $10 gift bowl and the prize drawing tickets are handed over to the evening's honoree. As nice as the money is, the feeling of support and community is what really makes a difference! If you bring a check for the honoree's gift, please make it out in the honoree's name.  During the dinner, attendees are invited to nominate and sponsor an honoree for the next dinner. The honoree for the next dinner is randomly drawn by the current honoree. The next dinner honoree is announced later that evening. Sponsors agree to provide a biography of their nominee and to provide prizes for the prize drawing and to help sell the prize drawing tickets at the next dinner. The price includes a salad, an entree, a non-alcoholic beverage, tax, and tip.  For those who cannot attend the dinner, please feel free to drop off any cash gifts or prizes to Century 21 Salvadori Realty or mail them to: H.O.W.
