      SSGT Benjamin A. Thompson, Jr's 50th Remembrance-POW*MIA Human Awareness Ribbon

      50 years ago, on October 25th, SSG Benjamin A. Thompson, Jr., US Army, was reported Missing in Action while on a reconnaissance mission with the Mobile Riverine Task Force, in the Mekong Delta, South Vietnam. At 23 years of age, he was accidently swept away in the swift currents and was declared Killed in Action, Presumptive Finding of Body. According to Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Accounting Agency (DPPA) and based on all information available, DDPA assessed our brother Ben's case to be in the analytical category of Non-Recoverable. To commemorate the anniversary of the 50th year he has not returned, Please be with us in our attempt to create the worlds largest 10,000 Human POW*MIA Awareness Ribbon at the Hank Aaron Stadium, in Mobile, Alabama on July 20, 2019. Gates to the stadium will open at 8:00 a.m., From 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. participants will go directly onto the baseball field to a designated area to pre-assemble the POW*MIA Human Awareness Ribbon. The majority of participants will hold a solid black 20" umbrella within the formation of the ribbon. Invited Friends of family will hold a 20" solid white umbrella and the Family of Ben will hold a 20" solid red umbrella. The formation of the ribbon will remain in place followed by 20 minute Memorial Remembrance Service for SSGT Thompson that will commence at 10:00 a.m. Immediately after a 21 gun salute, Taps will sound then all umbrellas open, The white umbrellas will spell out POW*MIA, and the solid red umbrellas will symbolize the determination to account for our missing. Lastly, the 20 minute photo/aerial session will follow.At dusk, a candlelight vigil will be take place at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park to honor Lieutenant Commander Robert Franklin Weimorts, Eight Mile, SSGT Ben Thompson, Jr., Saraland, PFC Robert Kirksey, Mobile and Lieutenant Junior Grade Thomas Pettis, Mobile, who remain unaccounted and unrecoverable. Both events are free to the public, however to participate with the World Record Ribbon, you must pre-register. Updates and notices for this event will be posted on facebook at SSGT Benjamin A.
