Dr. Max Felker-Kantor, Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Ball State University, will talk about "Police Power, State Violence, and Resistance in the Age of Mass Incarceration."

Police violence, most notably in communities of color, has gained widespread attention in the wake of high-profile police killings and antipolice protests in Ferguson and Baltimore. Such conditions have led many to ask how American society should respond to such abuses of state power. Yet, the problem of police power, state violence, and reform are not new to the twenty-first century. Coming out of the urban uprisings of the 1960s, the police worked diligently to expand their authority in American cities. In doing so, the police expanded the capacity for state violence. At the same time, resistance to police violence has a deep history, as activists and communities of color have long demanded significant police reform. Using this history as a guide, this talk will think through the growth of police power and the possibilities for reform in the age of mass incarceration.*
