      "Saint Judy"

"Saint Judy," a biographical drama based on the true story of an American attorney's landmark court fight that changed U.S. asylum rules for women facing dire circumstances, will be screened at a Community Forum in Newbury Park on Friday, July 26 at 7 p.m.

Michelle Monagan stars as Judy Wood, a young lawyer who took up the case of an Afghan woman in detention who, if returned to her patriarchal country, faced death at the hands of the Taliban because she started a school for girls. She won her case before the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, saving the life of her client and thousands of other women.

Attorney Judy Wood, who continues to be known for her advocacy, will be present for a discussion about asylum following the screening at Chalice Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3327 Old Conejo Road. The program is open to the public and free; donations are welcome.

Wood has carried the nickname "Saint Judy" for her single-mindedness in defense of those needing a legal ally. The film's poster sums up the significance of her work: "The Fight for One Is a Fight for All."

In her court battle, Wood argued that if her client, a young woman named Asefa, was returned to Afghanistan she would likely die in an honor killing at the hands of men who despised her activism. The film's cast includes Alfred Molina as Wood's boss who doesn't appear to share her idealism and Alfre Woodard as the judge who plays a crucial role in the case.
