Please join us Sunday, December 15 for a special night of honoring the ECM jazz label.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of record label ECM. Founded by Manfred Eicher of Germany, the label (which stands for Edition of Contemporary Music) has released more than 1600 titles, including those by stellar jazz luminaries Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, Vijay Iyer, Gary Burton, Eberhard Weber, Charlie Haden, Dave Holland….the list is long. Stylistically tying all these recordings together is Eicher’s signature stamp as visionary and meticulous hands-on producer. Joe Woodard of Downbeat describes the “ECM” “sounds” as “..an aesthetic [that] involves a sonic landscape of purity, the judicious use of silence and an insistence on live tracking, rather than excessive takes, overdubbing, or other production trickery.” It is music that is deep, often sublime and solicits active engaged listening.

The best selling ECM album is the now classic Koln Concert by Keith Jarrett - a singularly remarkable solo piano performance which has sold an astonishing 3.5 million records.

Joe Woodard further comments about ECM: “While ECM’s massive, diverse catalog defies easy description, one recurring threat has been an inward, meditative and even spiritual quality.” Spiritual? Eicher responds: “It’s spiritual in that music addresses matters of the spirit, but it also addresses every other aspect of existence. The ‘mission’ [of ECM] is simply to release music that matters.” (Downbeat, Oct 2019)*

Currently, concerts and music festivals are being held all over the USA and Europe to honor ECM label’s rich musical legacy.

To help celebrate ECM’s 50th anniversary, a recently formed M.O.B. Jazz Trio of Santa Barbara will give an evening performance honoring many of ECM’s artists. M.O.B. Trio is comprised of Sam McKinney on bass, Shaun Oster on drums, and Bruce Bigenho on piano. The group had its start when its members got together to jam on weekend and discovered that they had mutual love of ECM artists, as well as contemporary progressive music of Brazil. McKinney, from Brussels, has studied music at Berklee School of Music as well as at UCSB. Bigenho, from Korea, had early classical piano training but fell in love with jazz and latin styles when he moved to the USA. He cites Brazil’s Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti as his main musical inspiration. Local-born Oster (who also does visual art) has looked to drummers such as Tony Williams Elvin Jones as influences.

Their December 15th performance will also feature guest artists, such Nichol McKenzie on violin and Tom Henderson on chrominica,

The show begins at 7pm. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

      Cost: Payment required - 15.00 to 20.00
