Afrisc Meowle: Layers of Interpretation in the Old English Exodus

      Sanders Classroom 212-Spitzer Auditorium

Mary Dockray-Miller, professor of English at Lesley College in Massachusetts and VC ’86 English major, will present an analysis of the enigmatic African woman who appears at the end of the Old English Exodus, at the point when the Israelites have crossed the Red Sea and the Egyptian army has been destroyed in the same waters. This analysis will then also engage with the burgeoning discussions and inquiries around a multicultural Middle Ages.

Her latest book, Public Medievalists, Racism, and Suffrage in the American Women’s College, was published by Palgrave in 2017.

Sponsored by the English Department and the Dean of the Faculty. Co-sponsored by Medieval Renaissance Studies
