      365 Days/365 Plays

The Theatre Program at Chemeketa Community College is putting on its fall play, titled 365 Days / 365 Plays, written by Suzan-Lori Parks, November 8–16. The performance will use the concept of a theme-park ride to take the audience through a series of short plays.

“We are flipping this around and seating the audience on the stage,” says director, Jay Gipson-King. “We need to signal to the audience that they will experience this piece in a different way than they are used to doing with other plays.” Gipson-King is the theatre instructor at Chemeketa.

The “theme park ride” will include four stops: The World, Dreams, the Past, and the Future. “We are using the stops on the ride as a way of organizing the short plays by theme,” says Gipson-King.

“Each short play packs a punch,” notes Gipson-King. “You think you know what is going on, and then Parks surprises you. Each play also has a political dimension. Parks was writing during the Iraq invasion of 2004, and each one is still relevant today.”

Seating is limited, so please arrive early. Audiences should note that 365 Days / 365 Plays contains strong adult language and political themes. It is recommended for ages 13 and up.
