Donna Filomio & Audrey Otto - December Community House Artists

Sanibel artists Donna Filomio and Audrey Otto are exhibiting artwork for the month of December at the Sanibel Community House located at 2173 Periwinkle Way. The public is invited to view their display Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm.
As an art major at Edison Community College, Donna Filomio was recognized by Robert Rauschenberg and his foundation and granted a scholarship. After an AA degree from Edison Community College, Filomio received a BFA in Sculpture from West Virginia University. She taught art for New York City Board of Education. While employed there, she received a M.A. in Art Education, Suma Cum Laude, from Columbia University. Says Filomio, “I chose to teach in NYC because that was where I was born and raised, by the sea, on City Island.” Retiring after twenty years, she began spending winters on Sanibel Island. She is a multi-media artist, using wet and dry mediums, with Pastels being her favored medium because of their richness in pigment.
Local environmental issues in 2018 series inspired Filomio to create a series of pastel paintings depicting our paradise here in Florida, “As it should Be.” Her work “…reflects the very strong feelings and emotions that I harbor for our Mother sea, about her beauty, and significance to life. I am continuing this series for as long as need be, as it has become, over all other subjects, the subject of my heart.” Filomio’s wish is
“… to keep that vision of beauty in the forefront of every viewer’s mind.”
Audrey Otto is a native of Greater Cleveland, Ohio, and studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art. She is a poet as well as an artist. Having taught painting and sketching in an adult education program and worked in commercial art, she has exhibited widely in the Cleveland and Akron areas, winning numerous awards for her watercolors and pen and ink drawings. Otto’s paintings have been chosen for the Academic Graphic communication calendar for 8 years. She currently lives in Medina, Ohio, and Sanibel Island.
Otto believes that “Creating art is something I need to do. When I find a place in nature that is peaceful, I draw with pen and ink in my sketchbook. If I achieve a drawing that has good design, an interesting focal point and ideally lends itself to poetic thought, I paint with watercolor based on the drawing. Colors are remembered or invented.”
Both artists are members of the San Cap Art League. For more information, go to or visit
