Sanibel Captiva Art League is delighted to host well-known Everglades artist Jo-Ann Sanborn in a program, including a painting demonstration, at its next meeting on Thursday, November 21, 2019. The public is invited to attend at Sanibel Community House located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, from 1pm-3pm.
Sanborn (joannsanborn.com) has joyfully painted the threatened Everglades landscape since falling in love at first sight in the mid 1990’s. Working primarily in acrylics, she seeks to bring attention to the fragile landscape and hopes to encourage its preservation with her work. Using strong, expressionistic compositions rich with uncommon color, Jo-Ann invites to the viewer to take a breath and become engaged in the natural world.
Sanborn explains, “I’m awed by the simple dignity of a sable palm dancing in sunlight. The bold forms of the flora in the sun and the deep, mysterious shadows in shade invite artistic exploration. As soon as I master one view, the majesty of a cypress grove, a wind-riffled meadow in warm sunshine, or swirling clouds in a multitude of blues provide a new source of inspiration and challenge.”
In the Everglades, Sanborn says one can find peace watching the soft pastels of the morning sky change slowly as the sun rises and gladness in listening to the crystal-clear water gurgling softly as it travels steadily towards the gulf. “My images are ancient and familiar, palms, prairie, water and clouds. Through them, it is my fondest dream you will hear the voice of the Everglades through my work.”
Sanborn’s work is enjoyed by international collectors across the United States, Canada, several Europe countries, Scandinavia and Africa. She has been honored with solo shows and numerous awards and is a member of several professional organizations including the National Association of Women Artists. Sanborn loves travel, teaching and holds plein aire workshops in the Everglades. She lives and works on Marco Island, FL where she maintains her studio.
This meeting promises to be interesting, educational and fun. San Cap Art League is the islands’ local art league and all meetings are free and open to the public. Art League activities include weekly plein aire events, shows, newsletters, community support and so much more. For more information about shows, activities, membership and more, visit sancapart.com.
