      Barony of Tarnmist Harvest Feast

Bienvenue! Baroness Mira of Tarnmist invites each of you to our fall Harvest Feast on November 23rd 2019. Similar to an American Thanksgiving, the Bénichon is a weekend of fanfare and family celebrations. The festivities mark the end of désalpes, or the return of the cows from grazing in the high alpine meadows during summer months. The dairy farmers, who have been living in chalets, fill their blue wagons with cheese-making equipment and begin the eight-hour walk back to the village alongside their flower-adorned herd. This reunion of friends and family calls for a celebratory, six-course meal that can easily last eight hours. the Bénichon is unique to the French-speaking villages within the canton of Fribourg.

The word Benichon comes from the Latin benediction the Benichon was originally a religious festival celebrating the anniversary of the dedication of the parish church. This festival is difficult to date: it goes back to distant times, which are lost in the Archives but the oldest text evoking the Bénichon dates from the 15th century.
