The Storybook Ball - Celebrating Cinderella

Join us for The Storybook Ball, benefiting The Reading Group's reading services and scholarship program. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Regent Ballroom in Savoy.  This year, we celebrate Cinderella, or The Little Glass Slipper, translated and illustrated by Marcia Brown in 1954. Released by Scribner Press, the book is a retelling of the story of Cinderella as written by Charles Perrault and was the recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in 1955. Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a French poet and storyteller who is best remembered for his collection of fairy stories for children. The classic rags to riches story of love and magic is known in Western culture by the title 'Cinderella.' Perrault added the now famous elements of the fairy godmother, the pumpkin carriage, and the glass slippers. The central part of the story has remained unchanged and is the situation of poor Cinderella. Her mother died when she was young and Cinderella's father remarried a woman with two daughters of her own. The stepmother and the two ugly stepsisters have become an iconic part of the story. They torment and humiliate the beautiful Cinderella. In French, Perrault's young heroine was called Cendrillon because she was always covered in cinders from being made to sleep on the floor by the hearth. The story Cinderella helps children learn the morals of kindness towards all, forgiving others for doing wrong, and never letting bad things that happen to you ruin your heart. The themes behind the story are good versus evil and how luck can change your life. The evening will include an elegant dinner, cash bar, a silent auction, live auction, and entertainment fit for a princess. Attire is cocktail or formal - tiaras are optional!
