      MORNING SESSION:
      9:30 A.M.–NOON

      AFTERNOON SESSION:
      NOON–3:30 P.M.

The fourth annual Spectrum of Opportunity event celebrates the new
book Communication Alternatives in Autism: Perspectives on Typing and Spelling Approaches for the Nonspeaking and its authors, 10 autistic self-advocates who share their experiences with alternative forms of communication. The book is edited by Edlyn Vallejo Peña, director of Cal Lutheran’s Autism and Communication Center.

The celebration features author-led workshops and interactive activities for autistic self-advocates, family members, educators and professionals. The event is designed to provide a space for meaningful interactions between community members and influential autistic self-advocates about disability rights, inclusion and communication access; to inform college faculty members, teacher candidates and community educators about ways to support the inclusion and success of people who use alternative means to communicate; and to encourage young people of all abilities to become authors and speakers. The morning session offers information for all guests, and the afternoon portion focuses on community-building for autistic individuals and their support teams.

Admission for the morning session is $45; $35 for autistic individuals; and free for Cal Lutheran students, faculty and staff (registration required). The afternoon session is $40, which includes lunch, an autistic peer mentoring session and a drum circle. The deadline to register is Monday, Sept. 23.

Hosted by the Autism and Communication Center. For registration and information, visit CalLutheran.edu/autism.
