Song to the Moon: Apollo 11 Anniversary Concert

The festival’s closing concert reaches for the stars 50 years to the day after Apollo 11 landed on the moon and astronaut Neil Armstrong took “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” This multimedia concert is hosted by esteemed NASA Astronaut Donald Pettit, a veteran of three spaceflights. With Pettit’s spectacular space photographs projected above them, Festival Orchestra Napa performs Gustav Holst’s captivating 1918 celestial masterpiece, The Planets, and accompanies Canadian soprano Andriana Chuchman in Antonin Dvorak’s aria, Song to the Moon. The program also features Gordon Getty’s beautiful choral piece, The Old Man in the Night and the opening of Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, immortalized in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Pettit will also participate in a pre-concert talk, where he will share his experiences traveling to space.
